Julie and Matt
Julie and Matt had reached a point in their relationship where they needed to have the tough conversations around family traditions/rituals and how they would weave those traditions to further grow together. Julie wanted to raise a Jewish family, and Matt was onboard with that, but they really needed to have deeper conversations in order to move their relationship to the next level. Julie saw an advertisement for a URJ Reform Jewish Outreach Boston class called Yours, Mine and Ours, and got in touch with Joyce Schwartz, who answered all her questions about the class.
Their particular class was made up of 4 to 6 other couples, none of who were married at that point. The class was led by a skilled facilitator who created a warm and open environment for everyone to share. They explored lifecycles and rituals such as holidays, marriage, children and death. Julie and Matt felt that hearing what other couples were discussing helped them work out their issues as well. They also point out that the best conversations occurred in the car on their drive home. The class brought Matt and Julie closer together and gave them the ability to understand each other’s upbringings and what was important to moving forward as a unit. They went on to take A Taste of Judaism: Are You Curious? and Introduction to Judaism. Through these classes they've made many great lifetime friends who have helped shape their community in Boston.
